Global English Learning (GEL)

Empowering Rural Children Through Language Education

Project Overview

Global English Learning (GEL) is an educational empowerment initiative of Vincentian Social Services implemented in collaboration with Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL). The program seeks to bridge educational inequalities by providing quality English language education to children and young people from rural, tribal, and underserved communities.

Many children in remote areas face significant barriers to educational advancement due to limited access to quality learning resources, inadequate infrastructure, and socioeconomic challenges. GEL addresses this gap by creating accessible learning opportunities that equip students with essential English language skills, enabling them to participate more confidently in higher education, employment, and an increasingly interconnected world.

The program follows the internationally recognized Cambridge English Unlimited curriculum, offering a structured learning pathway from beginner to advanced levels.

Objectives

The GEL program aims to:

  • Improve English language proficiency among children and youth from rural and marginalized communities.

  • Enhance communication, academic performance, and learning confidence.

  • Increase access to opportunities in higher education and vocational training.

  • Equip students with skills necessary for future employment and global engagement.

  • Foster self-confidence, critical thinking, and personal development through interactive learning.

Program Structure

The curriculum is designed around six internationally recognized proficiency levels:

  • A1 – Beginner

  • A2 – Elementary

  • B1 – Intermediate

  • B1+ – Upper Intermediate

  • B2 – Advanced Intermediate

  • C1 – Advanced

The program emphasizes the development of all four core language competencies:

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Listening

  • Speaking

Learning is delivered through structured lessons, practical exercises, group activities, digital resources, and continuous assessment to ensure meaningful progress at every stage.

Who We Serve

The GEL program primarily serves:

  • Children and adolescents from rural and remote communities

  • Tribal and indigenous populations

  • Students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds

  • First-generation learners

  • Young people seeking improved educational and career opportunities

Special attention is given to communities where access to quality language education is limited or unavailable.

Building Futures Through Education

At Vincentian Social Services, we believe that language is a powerful tool for empowerment. Through the Global English Learning (GEL) program, we are committed to ensuring that children from rural and marginalized communities are not left behind, but are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue a brighter future.
