SMART SCREEN

Protecting Childhood in the Digital Age

Digital technology has transformed the way children learn, communicate, and grow. While it offers tremendous opportunities, excessive and unregulated screen use has emerged as a serious public health concern, affecting children's mental health, academic performance, physical wellbeing, family relationships, and social development.

Recognizing this growing challenge, Vincentian Social Services launched SMART SCREEN, a comprehensive initiative to promote responsible digital habits and prevent problematic screen use among children and adolescents.

Why SMART SCREEN?

The project was inspired by a simple yet powerful observation—a child being pacified with a mobile phone. What appeared to be a moment of convenience reflected a much larger reality: screens are increasingly replacing human interaction, play, and meaningful childhood experiences.

SMART SCREEN does not oppose technology. Instead, it seeks to help children, parents, schools, and communities achieve a healthy balance between digital engagement and real-life experiences.

Evidence-Based Intervention

The initiative is grounded in research. In collaboration with Loyola College of Social Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram, Vincentian Social Services conducted a baseline study among 728 students from seven coastal schools. The findings led to the development of the De Care Model for Managing Screen Addiction, a structured school-based intervention.

Further assessments using the standardized NIMHANS Screen Dependency Scale among 574 adolescents confirmed the need for sustained preventive efforts while also demonstrating significant improvements in children's awareness and understanding after the intervention.

A Community-Centred Approach

Building on the success of the school programme, SMART SCREEN has evolved into a community-based model. The project recognizes that children's digital behaviour is shaped not only by schools but also by families, peers, and the wider community.

The initiative now works with parents, teachers, community leaders, and local institutions to create supportive environments that encourage healthy digital habits and responsible technology use.

Our Vision

We envision a generation of children who use technology wisely—without compromising their mental health, relationships, learning, creativity, or authentic childhood experiences.

SMART SCREEN is not about eliminating screens; it is about empowering children and families to use them responsibly, safely, and meaningfully.
