De Scholars is an ongoing scholarship initiative by Vincentian Social Services designed to support economically disadvantaged children and youth across India. The program was launched during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many children in the country lost one or both parents. It aims to provide sustainable educational assistance to school-going children and college students, ensuring that no child is left behind due to financial hardship or family crises.
Our interventions primarily focus on children and adolescents who face multiple layers of vulnerability. This includes those who have lost parents during the pandemic, come from socio-economically challenged backgrounds, experience fragmented family environments, or live in conditions of extreme marginalization. Special attention is given to children affected by HIV/AIDS, recognizing the complex psychosocial and educational challenges they face.
The program is designed to enhance the skills, aptitudes, and academic performance of young minds while reducing the financial burden on their families. It addresses not just educational needs, but also the broader psychosocial and health concerns that impact a child’s ability to succeed.
Children are identified through our grassroots networks like the De Care Communities. We undertake a detailed socio-economic assessment for each applicant, which includes document verification, interviews with local stakeholders, and consultations with educators. Based on these assessments, customized financial scholarships are provided. Progress is continuously monitored through school records and teacher feedback, ensuring that each child receives ongoing mentorship and support.
